Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model of farming that comes from Black farmers from the Southern U.S. who developed creative and interdependent systems to survive and thrive. In this model, CSA members reserve a share of nourishing, local farm vegetables for the season. Members’ support ensures farmers have the resources to grow food and the peace of mind knowing our produce will reach people. For every crop of vegetables we grow, CSA members take on a portion of the risk and abundance of our production. At Kasama Farm we value collaboration and bringing people together, and we see our CSA members as an important part of our community.

Booker T. Whatley was a black farmer and professor at Tuskegee University. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, he developed a CSA model and advocated for the “Clientele Membership Club.” We hold gratitude and honor his work. The clientele membership club “enables the farmer to plan production, anticipate demand, and, of course, have a guaranteed market.” Source: Farming While Black, Leah Penniman
